Loren's Pledge
My Pledge to you, the Constituents of Ward 13,
There has been a lack of respect from elected officials for those who elected them. Constituents are often lied to during campaigns, then summarily ignored by those they elected. Their voices are not being represented at City Council.
In today's political climate, many elected officials are assumed to be untrustworthy and duplicitous. I believe that is a sad indictment of our political system, and I hope to change that.
In the last four years, over 1000 new hires were brought on at City Hall. 2 new departments that seem to simply be taking up office space, without any noticeable benefit to you, the taxpayers. Further to that, taxes have increased by just under 23% over this last term of council. Did you vote for these things? I don't think so.
If elected
- I WILL NOT vote in favour of an increase in taxes beyond the Provincial Rate of Inflation.
- I WILL NOT vote in favour of any new jobs at City Hall.
- I WILL NOT seek higher office during my four-year contract with you, the constituents of Ward 13.
I will publicly release a legal document guaranteeing these promises.
If I break my word, I will resign.
It is simple, it is basic, and it is honest.
A campaign is a job interview. Candidates are trying to impress you, the voters, you are the ones calling the shots. If anyone else were to lie during a job interview, that would be grounds for dismissal. The position of City Councillor should be no different.
Let's say good night to those who only say what they need to say to get elected.
Of course, I can only guarantee my vote, not the will of Council on the whole.
I hope that all of the candidates, including incumbents, make this same pledge of accountability.
