Homelessness

Homelessness, mental health and addiction are concerns for Dundas too.

It is my fervent belief that we must have compassion for our brothers and sisters while understanding the constraints and limitations of taxpayer dollars not being a bottomless pit. Since Hamilton has become a Sanctuary City, we have recruited the responsibilities of other places at the expense of our own community members. We seem to be doing a little bit of good for many without properly and wholistically caring for our own few.

In our community, we are fortunate enough to have brilliant, caring people working in this field with ideas, initiatives and hands-on real world experience. We need to hear from people working in the system, people living in the system, people with lived experience, not just Administrators justifying grant contributions. We need to start advocating for our community members, not trying to demand more money to throw at practices that are simply not working. We need representatives who will work with, not against Senior levels of government to address these issues. I believe strongly in learning from the experiences of others; other people, other communities. Looking beyond ourselves to other municipalities, other countries and learning from their success is how we can tailor a home-made solution to these growing problems.

We can no longer pretend that these issues only exist in Hamilton’s Downtown core. The vulnerable are everywhere. This is a Dundas problem.
